Health Ethics Saved in Alberta!

Just finished working with members of the Provincial (Alberta) Health Ethics Network to promote the importance of their organization to the delivery of quality health care in Alberta.  At the beginning of March, the Alberta Government was set to pull its funding and close its doors effective April 1, 2010.

Due to the work that I and others did to promote PHEN,  the Ministry of Health and Wellness has agreed to provide PHEN with funding to continue operations for the 2010-11 fiscal year.

The Provincial Health Ethic Network (PHEN) is a group of trained ethicists who provide advice on ethical issues to health professionals, government and the general public.  Given that science is giving us increasing powers over the health, quality of life and the longevity of an individual, while at the same time challenging us with an aging population, the question of ethics has never been more important.

In late February 2010, I was approached by a PHEN member who was determined not to let this organization, of which he was one of the founders, go down without a fight.  We met and mapped out a strategy to get PHEN membership engaged in saving their beloved organization.

There were two thrusts to this strategy: a communication strategy pointing out to Alberta Health decision makers the value of PHEN to Alberta’s health professionals, and an emotional appeal to PHEN members, all of whom have contributed, to a greater or lesser degree, to PHEN’s reputation as an internationally recognized ethical resource.

New Client – Computer Repair

I’m currently working with a client who has just opened up a computer repair shop as an adjunct to his onsite IT and web design business.  His desire was to combine his need to have a place to meet his clients with a business that would provide regular income.

In addition to having a multi-use location, each of his lines of business also mutually support one another: a small businessman brings his computer in for upgrade, decides to revamp his website and upgrade his office network.

The market for computer repair is growing: computers are becoming obsolete as new and more powerful programs (primarily games) are being demanded by customers and the spread of more complex computer viruses and malware will continue unabated for the forseeable future.

We are currently working together to develop ideas to make his business successful:

Ecomax Energy Services

EcoMax Energy Services Ltd. provides a wide range of quality products and services to the oil and gas industry, primarily in western Canada.

They are focused on providing our customers solutions that add value to their businesses by improving their economic and environmental performance.  Their customers include oil and gas production companies, drilling contractors and well service companies, as well as other oilfield supply and service businesses.

Ecomax Energy Services was the first oil and gas service company I worked for.  It provided me an opportunity to take my background in green technology and apply it to a business setting.  During my time there, I acted as their Inside Sales Representative while also coming up with ways to promote their emissions-free pump.

CCR Energy Services Inc.,

While with CCR, I worked in a variety of capacities: Business Development, VP Sales and Chief Operations Officer.

Youth Voter Day

Situation

In December 2005, the New Democratic and Conservative Parties defeated the government and triggered Canada’s second-ever election over Christmas. After fighting a federal, provincial and municipal election in the previous year, the public and media had no appetite for this election.

In addition, the National Campaign Manager for the Green Party of Canada had resigned the week before the election. We were ill prepared and disorganized at the top.

It was necessary for the Green Party of Canada to consolidate its electoral gains from the 2004 election (4.3% or 650,000 votes) and do everything in its power to get youth,  its most supportive demographic to the polls.

Real Time Reporting – Telus

Situation

The Vendor Manager assigned to work with Telus Marketing Services (TMS), an outsourced independent telemarketing firm,  struggled to find a consistent means of evaluating the TMS/Telus relationship.  His instructions were to manage the relationship such that he would extract the maximum benefit for Telus’ investment in the company.  The Telus executive would use his reports as a basis for determining whether or not they would continue this relationship.

Task

Through consultations with the Vendor Manager, I recommended that assessing Return on Investment would the most effective means of evaluating the Telus/TMS relationship.  Simply put, how much revenue did TMS generate on our behalf compared to how much they charged us?
